Standing by the Syrian Refugees at Syntagma Square

On Tuesday November 25, 2014, HYGEIA Group rushed to the aid of the Syrian refugees who had launched a hunger strike at Syntagma Square.

Having been informed of the need for medical aid, a team of 30 volunteers arrived at Syntagma Square with 3 ambulances and a van and provided medical assistance to the Syrian refugees, while they also distributed non-prescription medications free of charge to those in need. The team was made up of 11 physicians (general physicians, pulmonologists, cardiologists and pediatricians), as well as nursing and administrative staff. Food was also distributed to the children.

During the volunteers’ visit to Syntagma, more than 120 refugees were examined. The volunteers also treated a fainting spell, an epileptic crisis and a hypertension incident. In addition, one young girl was transferred to MITERA Hospital with suspicion of appendicitis, while another three patients were transferred to HYGEIA Hospital. After all the necessary tests, three of the patients were discharged and one of them underwent surgery. The surgical procedure was successful and the patient was discharged a few days later. On the following day, 50 sleeping bags were distributed to the refugees.

On December 4, 2014, an HYGEIA ambulance was dispatched anew to Syntagma Square to check over some refugees who had complained of health problems. Two of them had to be transferred to HYGEIA Hospital, where one of them underwent surgery and the other received first aid.
