Autologous stem-cells transplantation

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is the most advanced treatment used against blood diseases that were formerly incurable

The Transplant is based on the following principle:
If the dose of chemotherapy administered to the patient is greater than the one administered in usual chemotherapy protocols (megatherapy), then the normal stem cells of the bone marrow, which produces blood cells, will be destroyed along with the abnormal cancer cells.

The Autologous stem-cells transplantation performs peripheral stem-cells for the treatment used blood diseases that were formerly incurable.

After megatherapy, this destruction of the Bone Marrow is treated by the administration of haemopoetic cells taken either from the bone marrow or from the blood of the patient himself, (autologous transplant) or from a donor with compatible tissue (allogenous transplant). In the allogenous stem cells transplants the emergence of the GVHD, graft serious host diseases, increases significantly the cure rate.

The first transplant at Hygeia was carried out in 1990, and thus HYGEIA’s Autologous stem-cells transplantation Unit was created. (A. Papagiannis, G. Karianakis)

The Unit consists of two single rooms and auxiliary spaces. It operates under conditions of total sterilization, which is achieved by positive air pressure, and sterilization of all objects (bed – mattress, blouses, instruments, foods etc.).

The Autologous stem-cells transplantation Unit is supported by sub units for Hemapheresis and Freezing of Bone Marrow Cells. The stem cells transplantation can treat cases that cannot be treated with more conventional therapies.

Thus, it has been possible to treat diseases which would have otherwise been considered incurable, such as Chronic myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as those which relapse following the usual treatment (e.g. lymphoma, acute leukemia).
