1st Neurosurgery Department

This is a modern department that covers the entire surgical spectrum of the specialty. The surgical activity pertains both to planned patient cases presenting Central Nervous System and Vertebral column pathologies as well as to the management of patients admitted to the Hospital’s Emergency Department and for whom immediate Neurosurgical care is required.

The Clinic’s philosophy focuses on the individualised management of patients depending on the specificities and particularities of their condition, on the basis of international protocols (Evidence Based Medicine).

The Clinic focuses on the sectors of neuro-oncology, skull base surgery, spinal surgery with the use of ‘state of the art’ spinal fusion systems, endoscopy and stereotactic surgery. The precision in the identification of the brain lesions to be resected is achieved intraoperatively with the use of the Neuronavigation system. The neurophysiology monitoring  (motor and sensory evoked potentials, electromyogram) is applied intraoperatively for the safe resection of brain, spinal cord and spinal  column lesions.

Close collaboration with the Gamma Knife Brain Radiosurgery Department allows for the non-invasive treatment of neurosurgical and neurological conditions. The Neurosurgery Clinic participates in international clinical studies while organising and providing courses and workshops. The Neuro-Oncology Board in co-operation with the 3^rd Oncology Clinic of the Hygeia Athens Diagnostic and Therapeutic Centre under Mrs. E. Razi and the participation in it of doctors of all relevant specialties, allows for an interdisciplinary approach and the individualised treatment of brain and spinal cord tumour patients.

HYGEIA hospital prides itself of state-of-the-art equipment for the safe application of all brain surgical approaches, such as a Zeiss Pentero robotic microscope, linked to a Medtronic Treon neuronavigation system, intraoperative ultrasound imaging system, Radionics CRW stereotactic system, tumour ultrasound aspirators and Karl Storz endoscopes.

Cutting-edge technological equipment allows for the application of all brain surgery approaches, including the least invasive ones (mini-craniotomies) as well as endoscopic procedures (intraventricular lesions surgery, hydrocephalus treatment, transsphenoidal sellar region surgery and anterior skull base surgery).
