The 3rd Neurosurgical Department of the Hygeia Hospital, under the direction of Dr Vasilios Zerris, Professor of Neurosurgery at European University, the University of Cyprus and the A& M University of Texas, USA, applies specialised, state-of-the-art treatments for the management of spine, brain and peripheral nerve diseases.
Based upon therapeutic indications we use specialised surgical techniques and cutting-edge medical technology (surgical microscope, endoscope, stereotactic neuronavigation, neuromonitoring, radiofrequency ablation) in order to safeguard the best outcome with the least possible discomfort for the patient.
We treat the entire spectrum of spine diseases of degenerative, traumatic or oncological aetiology, applying an array of treatments ranging from non-surgical techniques (such as epidural cortisone injections) to the most sophisticated anterior – posterior instrumentations, ensuring therapeutic solutions even in cases which were regarded as unmanageable until recently. To selected patients we apply minimally invasive surgical techniques involving very small incisions, which result in immediate post-operative mobilisation, reduced hospitalisation time and rapid recovery.
Furthermore, the clinic also treats brain diseases, such as tumours (with the use of an endoscope, when indicated, as in the case of pituitary adenomas), vascular diseases (aneurysms and vascular malformations), hydrocephalus, neuralgias and traumatic injuries. Our clinic is staffed by highly trained neurosurgeons specialising among others in functional neurosurgery, thus being able to manage conditions such as drug-resistant epilepsy, tremor, chronic pain, spasticity and Parkinson disease (electrical stimulator implants, neuronal function inhibitors, intrathecal drug-delivery pumps as well as hyperselective tissue lesioning).
Thanks to its training and vast experience in the USA, our surgical team is able to treat spine, brain and peripheral nerve diseases as mentioned indicatively below:
