3rd Gynecologic Oncology Department

The 3rd Department of Gynecologic Oncology handles all cases of gynecologic cancer as well as all benign conditions of the female reproductive system.

All diagnostic and therapeutic decisions are made for each patient separately following extensive consideration and discussion in our oncology board with the participation of other relevant specialties such as medical oncologists, clinical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and cytologists, thus ensuring the best possible outcome.

Cases are treated by laparoscopic, robotic or open approach, depending on the particularities of each of our patients and always in line with the latest guidelines.

Particular emphasis is placed on radical surgical treatment of advanced ovarian cancer with extensive surgical procedures including bowel resections, lymphadenectomies and peritonectomies as well as on minimally invasive procedures for obese patients with endometrial cancer.

Recent methods for fertility preservation in women without children with neoplasia, as well as techniques such as the sentinel lymph node biopsy aiming at reducing morbidity, have been incorporated in clinical practice as our physicians keep abreast with developments and receive continuous training.

Nikos Akrivos, Head of the Department, is a certified Gynecologic Oncologist by the RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians – Gynaecologists of the United Kingdom) as well as by the ESGO (European Society of Gynecologic Oncology). He has also been a fellow of robotic surgery at the only UK centre accredited to provide official training. In June 2012 he won first place at the European Robotic Surgery Contest in Marseille (Da Vinci Simulator Championship – SERGS). He has been certified in colposcopy by the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology – BSCCP.

Dimitris Tourlakis has specialised in gynecologic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy at the Endoscopic Training Centre in Antwerp (Belgium) (Prof. Bruno van Herendael, ex-president ISGE). He was trained in gynecologic oncology at the Heidelberg University Clinic and at Chemnitz Gynaecology Clinic in Germany. He has completed his Advanced Gynecological Endoscopy Fellowship with the University Clinic of Ljubljana – Slovenia and has been HSCCP certified in colposcopy.

Stavros Natsis has specialised in gynecologic oncology in Great Britain, as a Senior Clinical Fellow at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology of ‘Queen Elisabeth’ Hospital in Gateshead and at the world reputed ‘Royal Marsden’ Hospital in London, where he participated in a multitude of surgical procedures next to internationally acknowledged surgeons. He was a member of the research group that first applied the laparoscopic sentinel lymph node identification method in endometrial and cervical cancer using the ICG technique. He has been certified in the management of severely ill patients (CRISP).

The Doctors of the Department have been steadily collaborating since March 2015, aiming at the radical management of gynecologic cancer and at curing patients, always respecting the patients’ wishes and placing emphasis on the quality of life.
