The first and currently the single Center of Excellence in the field of Colorectal surgery in Greece

The Hospital’s 6th Department of Surgery is  the only  Center of Excellence in Greece, in the field of Colorectal Surgery.   Accordingly, the chief of the Department, Dr Constantinos S. Mavrantonis, has been awarded the title of Master Surgeon in Colorectal Surgery.

The Center of Excellence in Colorectal Surgery (COECS) certification is awarded by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC, http://www.surgicalreview.org), a nonprofit organization headquartered in North Carolina, USA. The internationally qualified SRC experts performed an on-site inspection and documented whether the numerous parameters and requirements of the standard are met. These include the surgical experience of the team and the implementation of recognized surgrical and  follow-up protocols.  Moreover, they assessed the safety with which procedures are performed, the low complication rates and the effectiveviness of treatment modalities. They also reviewed in detail the qualifications and training of the staff, the medical equipment and infrastructure, as well as the  Hospital’s comprehensive quality and patient safety plan, which has already received the Gold Seal of Approval® by the  Joint Commission International hospital accreditation organization.

Dr  Mavrantonis commented that “hospital and surgeon accreditation, essentially equates with treatment effectiveness and patient safety.  Numerous publications  show that optimal surgrical results are achieved  when  performed by large volume specialized surgeons, in large hospitals with appropriate infrastructure. The whole concept of Centers of Excellence is really about offering better care to our patients. Our  patients must be able to choose physicians based on their field of expertise and their clinical results”.
