The Department of Hepato Pancreato Biliary Surgery of HYGEIA completes 10 years of operation

05 September 2023

The first in the private sector

2023 is a milestone year for the Department of Hepato pancreato biliary Surgery of HYGEIA, the first to be established in the private sector in Greece, as it completes 10 years of operation and offering specialized care to patients with malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract.

From the first day of its operation, the Department of Hepato pancreato biliary Surgery of HYGEIA has been at the forefront of medical developments by applying, among other things, advanced surgical techniques and ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocols, which allow for rapid recovery and short stays of patients in the hospital with an average hospital stay of 4 days for hepatectomies and 5 days for pancreatectomies.

Indicatively, in the last decade more than three thousand patients with such malignancies have been interdisciplinarily evaluated and more than five hundred and fifty hepatectomies and pancreatectomies have been successfully performed. Since 2019, the Department has successfully launched the application of Robotic surgery for pancreatic and liver tumors with the Da Vinci Xi robotic system, and to date, numerous robotic pancreatectomies and hepatectomies have been performed.

The Director of the Department of Hepato Pancreato biliary Surgery at HYGEIA, Dr. Georgios Tzimas, emphasizes: “Developments in the surgical treatment of pancreatic liver and biliary tract cancers are rapid, and we now have modern weapons against cancer in our therapeutic armamentarium. With modern technology and with our highly trained staff, our Department of Hepato pancreato biliary Surgery at HYGEIA is constantly at the forefront of developments, being the largest reference center in the private sector in Greece. In addition, the Department is distinguished for its prolific scientific activity, with numerous publications in prestigious international scientific journals, as well as its participation in major European multicenter studies on pancreatic, liver and biliary cancers, thus confirming our commitment to excellence”.
