New International Consensus Statements for Managing Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Rhinorrhea
09 November 2020
HYGEIA announces the honorary distinction achieved by the Director of the Endoscopic Paranasal Sinus & Skull Base Surgery Department, Professor Christos Georgalas, MD, PhD, MRCS (Ed), DLO, FRCS (ORL-HNS), who headed the consensus committee that issued the new international consensus statements for managing spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea.
The international consensus statements were presented during the international Santo-Rhino II workshop, attended by scientists from 28 countries, including the most highly acclaimed endoscopic surgeons (ENT and neurosurgeons) from Europe, North and South America, and Australia.
Consensus statements are issued by a panel of experts and are based on the latest available scientific evidence and clinical experience, constituting the key clinical manuals for diagnosing and treating medical conditions. You can read the consensus statements for managing spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea here.
Professor Christos Georgalas, Workshop organizer and head of the consensus committee, noted, “The new consensus statements highlight the significance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing idiopathic CSF rhinorrhea, underpinning the need to check patients for intracranial hypertension. In the past, many patients experienced recurrence. We now know that the reason for recurrences is intracranial hypertension; treating it may be the key to positive long-term results, with a success rate that may even reach 100% in certain cases.”
