MITERA: Conference on Update on Obstetrics & Gynecology in partnership with the University of Florida

All the latest developments in Obstetrics & Gynecology were discussed during the “Conference on Update on Obstetrics & Gynecology”, which was successfully organized by MITERA Hospital. Distinguished faculty members from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida (Jacksonville, USA) participated in the event.

The University of Florida is among the leading institutes in the USA as fas as medical education is concerned. Every year, it organizes educational activities in hospitals and educational institutes abroad, with the aim of exchanging scientific knowledge and experience. In this context, a team of distinguished faculty members visited Greece, and, more specifically, MITERA Hospital, for the first time.

The lectures during the 3-day conference covered the full spectrum of Obstetrics & Gynecology. In the area of Gynecologic Oncology, Dr. Guy Benrubi, who originally comes from Greece and is currently the Chairman of the University of Florida’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, focused on ovarian cancer, the most aggressive  gynecologic malignancy. As he noted, “with 80% of the cases diagnosed at an advanced stage, comprehensive surgical treatment, performed by highly trained Gynecologic Oncologists and their associates, is very important”. Regarding chemotherapy, Dr. Benrubi seemed to be optimistic and gave emphasis on the future role of targeted therapies for both the hereditary and sporadic forms of the disease. In Obstetrics, one of the most interesting discussions focused on preeclampsia, a serious complication that may be diagnosed in approximately 5% of pregnancies. In detail, Dr. Erin Burnett, Assistant Professor and Chief of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Florida, presented the strict protocols that must be followed when monitoring these pregnancies, in order to improve perinatal outcomes and minimize maternal risks.

On his part, the conference co-ordinator, Dr. Vasileios Sioulas, Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Head of the MITERA’s Department of Gynecologic Oncology, highlighted that “the selection of MITERA by the University of Florida’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to organize a scientific meeting in Greece is a great privilege for us.
