HYGEIA Group: Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler Delivers Speech on “Byzantium, our Own History” at the N. Louros Conference Center

The people who gathered at the packed N. Louros Conference Center at MITERA Hospital on December 18, 2017 had the chance to embark on a unique mental journey through Byzantium, prompted by the speech delivered by Ms Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler.

Before the medical, nursing and administrative staff of HYGEIA Group, as well as other attendees, Ms Ahrweiler – historian, Byzantologist and former Dean at the University of Sorbonne – commenced with a brief overview of the Byzantine Empire, which succeeded the Roman Empire. As she noted, the Byzantine Empire lasted for more than a thousand years (330-1453) and spanned three continents (Europe, Asia and Africa) for a few centuries, leaving an indelible mark everywhere it expanded.

Ms Ahrweiler also talked about several Byzantine milestones, the state and church, the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the secular leaders, the orthodox faith, and the relationships between the Byzantines and their neighbors.

After this overview, Ms Ahrweiler managed to spark the interest of the audience, while also creating the feeling that the Byzantine Empire is a landmark in the history of Greece and modern Greeks do undoubtedly hail from the Byzantines.

The N. Louros Conference Center is located within MITERA Hospital and often hosts HYGEIA Group events.
