On the occasion of the World Parkinson’s Day on April 9, the HYGEIA Hospital Parkinson & Movement Disorder Department, assisted by the 2nd Neurological Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, organized a Parkinson’s awareness and information event for patients and carers. The event was held under the auspices of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.
The topics introduced by neurology specialists during the event included the clinical condition and pharmaceutical treatment of the disease (Maria Stamelou, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Head of the HYGEIA Parkinson & Movement Disorder Department), interventional treatments for advanced Parkinson (Ioannis Velentzas, Neurologist, Director of the HYGEIA Clinical Neurophysiology Department), as well as genetics and future treatments. Great emphasis was placed on supportive treatment, and specifically specialized psychological support (Dr Beratos, Neuropsychologist), physiotherapy (E. Manaos, Director of the HYGEIA Physiotherapy Department) and special speech therapy techniques (P. Giannika, Speech Therapist).
