The HYGEIA Hospital Thoracic Surgery Clinic successfully organized the 1st Greek Thoracic Expert Meeting VATS Approach on October 20 and 21, 2017. The invited keynote speaker was world renowned Professor Tomaz Stupnik from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Professor Stupnik is famous in the European thoracic surgery community due to the thoracoscopic program he has adopted at his clinic.
Doctors from nearly all the Greek thoracic surgery centers attended the event and exchanged views on the advancements in thoracoscopic lobectomy in Greece.
Their interest focused on:
- The speech delivered by Professor Stupnik, who spoke about his experience as well as the results on thoracoscopic and minimally invasive techniques at his center. A discussion ensued among the attendees on the implementation of the technique in Greece and the benefits arising (financially viable oncologic treatment for patients).
- The participation of the attendees in a workshop to help them get familiar with the VATS approach. Professor Stupnik has developed a model through which the attendees had the chance to perform virtual procedures, such as sphenoidal excisions and preparation of lung vessels, so as to get an idea of minimally invasive techniques and their intricacies.
At the end of the second day, Mr Iliadis and Professor Stupnik performed 2 surgeries. The attendees had the chance to watch the live broadcast, and exchange views on the technique, the accesses, the perioperative problems that may arise and how to solve then.
