Endoscopic Paranasal Sinus & Skull Base Surgery

The 4th Endoscopic Paranasal & Skull Base Surgery Workshop was held at MITERA Hospital on Saturday February 17, 2018. The event was organized by the Endoscopic Surgery Department, and was supported by the 1st ENT Clinic, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; the Greek Medical Association; the Hellenic Society for ENT-Head & Neck Surgery; the Athens Medical Association; and the Union of Freelance ENT Professionals. More than 100 people attended the Workshop.

The event started with the live broadcast of an endoscopic closure of a large anterior skull base defect, which was performed by the Department Director, Mr Christos Georgalas, FRCS (ORL-HNS).

Being a complex case, both the surgical technique and the indications provided an excellent opportunity for further discussion and answers to the questions raised by the attendees. Distinguished Greek doctors participated in the Workshop, while we also had the pleasure of welcoming two surgeons from abroad: Professor Anshul Sama, rhinologist and skull base surgeon from the University of Nottingham, and neurosurgeon Wouter van Furth, a pioneer in endoscopic skull base surgery from the University of Leiden.

The event mainly focused on education and training. This aim was greatly achieved by the excellent speech delivered by moderator and Director Angelos Nikolaou, a driving force in education in Greece and across Europe, as he serves as Honorary Chairman of the European Examination Board in Otorhinolaryngology (FEBORL).

The Workshop concluded with a discussion and the presentation of opposing views from major public hospitals in Athens.
