The annual event organized by the Scientific Union of HYGEIA Doctors was successfully held on the island of Naxos this year. The scientific event was entitled “Cancer: Prevention Beats Fear” and was attended by numerous doctors from HYGEIA and Naxos, as well as many locals.
The topic was quite tough, with many human and social implications. An effort to provide an insight to this very difficult and delicate issue was made through very carefully selected speeches by distinguished invited guests, as well as the very interesting discussion that ensued between scientists and the local community.
The scientists also attempted to explain how the most frequently encountered types of cancer can be prevented, while they also stressed the importance of changing many of the views associated with our modern lifestyle in order to achieve this.
The scientific program was combined with visits to many significant cultural sights of the island. In addition, local bodies approached the HYGEIA scientists to discuss the problems associated with the public healthcare system, especially on the islands, as well as the ways that solutions can be found. One of the highlights of the one-day event was the award presented to Mr Chrysostomos Melissinos, Honorary Director of the 1st Pulmonology Clinic at HYGEIA, who was born on the island of Naxos.
