Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty in One Session

Total hip arthroplasty of both hips in one session was successfully performed at HYGEIA Hospital on a 58-year-old patient with severe osteoarthritis using the MAKO Robotic system.

The simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty was performed by Orthopedic Specialist and Director of the HYGEIA 1st Orthopedics Clinic, Mr. Savas Sourmelis.

Τhe procedure was preferred as the recommended method since  the patient fulfilled all the necessary criteria, with bilateral avascular necrosis of the both femoral heads, and complete inability to walk and perform daily activities.

The patient underwent the procedure with one anesthesia to restore the damage of both hip joints through a small incision, while blood transfusion was not needed, even though he underwent two surgical procedures simultaneously in one session. The procedure was successful, and the patient was mobilized immediately and discharged on the second postoperative day.

Compared to traditional methods, minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty using the MAKO Robotic system offers extreme accuracy in preparing and placing the implants in the anatomic position . It also provides an excellent surgical functional result that completely resembles the human hip or knee  Modern total hip arthroplasty with Robotic methods are performed with minimal invasiveness, minimal blood loss without the need for transfusion,  minimal risk of complications and immediate mobilization of the patient from the same day.
