Subtotal Resection of Pancreas and Spleen Using the da Vinci Xi Robotic System

A procedure involving subtotal resection of the pancreas and spleen using the da Vinci Xi robotic system was successfully performed at HYGEIA Hospital.

Specifically, a patient aged 75 with severe history of heart disease was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor and underwent robotic pancreatosplenectomy using the da Vinci Xi system. His postoperative course was very good and he was discharged on the 4^th postoperative day.

The procedure was performed by the HYGEIA Hospital Hepatobiliary Surgery Department team, headed by Mr Georgios Tzimas, surgeon, paving the way for the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer.

As noted by Mr G. Tzimas, Director of the HYGEIA Hospital Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, “The da Vinci Xi robotic platform provides extreme accuracy and the possibility of performing fine movements, especially in very demanding surgical procedures, such as pancreatic surgery. The biopsy findings demonstrate that the oncologic result is similar to that of an open surgery, but with faster return to daily activities, minimal postoperative pain and less perioperative stress. This technique is ideal for select patients, while soon the Department will expand to more complex surgical procedures, such as pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) and hepatectomy, in partnership with the Carolinas Medical Center Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, a center of excellence in robotic surgery.”
