HYGEIA: Innovative Surgical Treatment of Rectal Cancer
27 February 2019
Laparoscopic Transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) is an innovative surgical technique that has redefined treatment for patients with rectal cancer. It is performed in specialized centers, among which the HYGEIA Hospital’s 6th Department of Surgery, headed by Dr Constantinos Mavrantonis MD, PhD, FACS.
The operation consists of a laparoscopic hybrid transabdominal-transanal procedure, whereby the surgeon approaches the rectum through the anal canal (from bottom to top) and through the abdomen (from top to bottom). This method offers significant benefits to the patient, not only as a minimally invasive procedure but also as it allows total excision of the mesorectum and lymphnodes, regardless of body habitus. Moreover, it decreases significantly the need for colostomy, even for cancers located close to the anal sphincters.
Furthering minimally invasive surgery, the same team has been performing the TaTME procedure by use of the most advanced minimally invasive technology, the DaVinci Xi Robotic System at the HYGEIA Hospital, paving the way for minimally invasive rectal cancer treatment on a European and international level.
As noted by the Head of the Department, Dr. Constantinos Mavrantonis “Although this procedure is continuously gaining ground globally, it is only performed in dedicated centers worldwide, including our Department. In terms of training, even though there is growing interest among the medical community, there are few training centers globally, none of which are in Greece. Recognizing the need for specialized rectal cancer treatment, the 6th Department of Surgery – HYGEIA Hospital, organizes TaTME courses (www.nodeinstitute.org) for surgeons who wish to perform this operation, in order to enhance patient treatment for rectal cancer.”
HYGEIA Hospital’s 6th Department of Surgery is the only Center of Excellence in Greece in colorectal surgery. Dr. Constantinos Mavrantonis, who serves as Head of the Department, was also awarded the title of Master Surgeon for the same specialty.
