Professor Helen Giamarellou Becomes Member of Academia Europaea

Professor Helen Giamarellou, Internal Medicine Physician/Infectious Diseases Specialist and Head of the 1st Internal Medicine-Infectious Diseases Department of HYGEIA Hospital, has been elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) for her contribution to the promotion of learning, training, and research in the field of Infectious Diseases.

A total of 32 Greek scientists, including 3 physicians, are among the Academy members. Candidate members are elected after being nominated by other Academy members. The nomination is then reviewed and evaluated by competent Academy committees.

The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 as a non-profit, non-governmental, international organization by scientists from all fields of science, who are experts and leaders in their discipline. The Academia encourages the highest possible standards in research and education, and promotes a better public understanding of the benefits of knowledge and learning and of scientific issues that affect society and its quality of life.

Dr Helen Giamarellou was appointed Internal Medicine Professor at the Athens University Medical School in 1997. Soon after this appointment she set up the 4th Internal Medicine Department at Athens University, as well as the relevant Infectious Diseases Research Lab, initially at Sismanogleio Hospital and then at Attikon University General Hospital. She has been serving as Executive Committee President of the Hellenic Society of Chemotherapy since 1996. From 2007 to 2017 she served as National Representative for Antimicrobial Resistance at the ECDC in Stockholm. Since 2010, she has been the Head of an Internal Medicine-Infectious Diseases Department at HYGEIA Hospital. Her research work includes 1,397 publications (1,154 have been published abroad) and 479 research articles in foreign journals with over 13,000 citations (h-factor 58), while she has contributed chapters in 54 books. During the 19th Conference of the Hellenic Society of Internal Medicine in 2014, she received the 19th Hippocrates Award, which is presented to distinguished and internationally recognized physicians from abroad, specializing in fields of Internal Medicine.
