Radiation Oncology – Redefining the Future Today

HYGEIA Hospital’s Radiotherapy and Oncology Center constitutes a center of excellence in Greece and Europe with regard to its technical equipment and the implementation of innovative radiotherapy techniques. It is equipped with three state-of-the-art robotic linear accelerators, which incorporate the most advanced systems for Image Guided RadioTherapy (IGRT).

A scientific conference on the topic “Radiation Oncology: Redefining the Future Today” was held at Hilton Hotel on May 16-17, 2009, organized by HYGEIA Hospital. During his welcoming speech, the Chairman of the HYGEIA and MITERA Board of Directors, Mr Konstantinos Stavrou, noted, “HYGEIA Hospital’s Radiotherapy and Oncology Center is the largest investment in the field of Radiotherapy in Greece; an investment that has reached €7 million. The new ΕLEKTA AXESSE, SYNERGY and PLATFORM linear accelerators offer a unique opportunity, not only to Greeks, but also to patients from neighboring countries, for the best possible treatment of various types of cancer. Besides, ΕLEKTA AXESSE was one of the first linear accelerators to be installed in Europe and around the world”.

During the press conference, Mr Philippos Angelakis, radiotherapist-oncologist and head of HYGEIA Hospital’s Radiotherapy and Oncology Center, said, “The aim of the new radiotherapy techniques with the use of the three robotic linear accelerators is dose escalation, with less toxicity, offering radical treatment and preserving vital organs. Moreover, the accuracy of robotic equipment offers the opportunity of providing radiotherapy treatment to patients with a small number of metastases, with the aim of curing them.”
