Medical Physics

The Medical Physics Department (MPD) is responsible for all practices that use ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for the purposes of treatment and diagnosis, ensuring safety and accuracy for patients and staff.

In this context, the Medical Physics Department offers support to all Hospital’s departments which use ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, such as the Radiotherapy Oncology Center, the Radiosurgery Department (Gamma Knife), the Prostate Brachytherapy Center, the Radiology Department, the CT & MRI Department, the Nuclear Medicine Department and the PET/CT Department.

The services it offers to the above departments include:

  • Developing and implementing a quality assurance program
  • Acceptance and commissioning of all new equipments
  • Performing regular quality controls
  • Ensuring radiation protection for the working staff and public
  • Optimizing applications that use ionizing radiation
  • Handling radioactive sources and radioactive waste
  • Preparing safe operation and radiation protection reports in order to issue operating licenses for departments that use ionizing radiation, as well as the MRI department
  • Organizing radiation protection seminars

The services it offers to the various hospitals departments are outlined below.

Radiotherapy and Oncology Center
The MPD is responsible for the acceptance, commissioning and quality control, ensuring the optimal and safe operation of all radiation devices, including the three linear accelerators, the simulator and the Ir-192 high-dose rate brachytherapy system. It is also responsible for the relevant treatment planning programs (Oncentra, Monaco, GammaPlan) as well as the patient management system (Mosaiq).

It prepares the treatment plans for radiotherapy patients, in collaboration with the attending physician and is responsible for the safe and accurate implementation of the treatment. In this context, it is the department mainly responsible for introducing innovative radiotherapy techniques for the first time in Greece, such as 3D Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Radiotherapy & Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and High Dose Rate (FFF) treatments.

The use of the above state of the art techniques rank Radiotherapy Oncology Center as the best in Greece, with international recognition, as demonstrated by:

  • The number of patients treated in the Center (approximately 120/month) and the percentage of patients who undergo special contemporary techniques (over 80%).
  • The fact that, together with Gamma Knife department, it is a Center of Excellence for Stereotactic Radiotherapy & Radiosurgery according to the International Radiosurgery Association.
  • The fact that it is a Reference Site and a Pilot Center for the advanced software used by these techniques (Monaco, Mosaiq).
  • The members of the MPD are often invited to speak at Greek and international conventions and conferences, while they also publish in distinguished international journals.

Radiosurgery Department (Gamma Knife)
The MPD is responsible for performing quality controls and ensuring the optimal and safe operation of the Gamma Knife system. It prepares the treatment plan for patients (approximately 20/month), in collaboration with the attending physician and the radiation oncologist, and is responsible for the safe and accurate implementation of the treatment.  In this context, it implements innovative treatment techniques, some of which have been published in the most distinguished international journals and have been presented in relevant international conventions.

Prostate Brachytherapy Center
The MPD is responsible for preparing and managing radioactive iodine sources, performing quality controls of the iodine application and planning the treatment in real time in the operating room. It also implements the treatment, in collaboration with the urologist and the radiation oncologist. It is further responsible for reviewing/confirming the implantation and dosage, by performing a CT scan 1 month after surgery.

Radiology Department
The MPD is responsible for acceptance, commissioning and quality controls, ensuring the optimal and safe operation of the radiation equipment. These include 18 radiology devices (conventional X-Ray systems, C-arm, mobile systems, mammography system, panoramic X-ray system) and 4 angiographic systems.

CT & MRI Department
The MPD is responsible for acceptance, commissioning and quality controls, ensuring the optimal and safe operation of the imaging equipment, including 3 CT scanners, 3 MRI scanners and 1 bone densitometry device.

Nuclear Medicine Department & PET/CT
The MPD is responsible for acceptance, commissioning and quality controls, ensuring proper and safe operation of the 2 gamma cameras and the PET/CT system, as well as the gamma counters at the In Vitro/RIA Department.
It also responsible for the management of all radiopharmaceuticals and other sources required for the examinations performed in the Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT departments and for radioactive waste disposal.

MITERA Hospital
The MPD is responsible for acceptance, commissioning and quality controls, ensuring the optimal and safe operation of the imaging equipment, including 6 X-ray systems, 2 mammography systems, 1 CT scanner, 1 MRI scanner, 1 angiographic system and 1 bone densitometry system. It is also responsible for the quality assurance program, in accordance with the Radiation Protection Regulation and the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), and for the optimal performance of all radiology examinations, in collaboration with the Radiology Department, and the CT & MRI Department.
