Athens Shoulder Course

The 3rd Orthopaedic Clinic of Hygeia Hospital, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Arthroscopy (Società Italiana di Artroscopia) organized the 2nd Athens Shoulder Course, that took place from the 1st until the 3rd of February 2018, in Athens, Greece.
The basic aim of this International course was to bring in contact the participants with innovative and cutting-edge techniques and to discuss controversies concerning the shoulder arthroscopy and open surgery, today. All the topics were approached from a theoretical and practical point of view, aiming to have immediate influence on the daily practice of the participants in the management of shoulder problems in athletes and everyday people.
The theoretical sessions of the course took place at the “N. Louros” Conference Center of MITERA Hospital (member of Hygeia Group) and consisted of stimulating lectures from renowned European and charismatic Greek shoulder surgeons, as well as live broadcast of 4 surgical operations. The high level of the lectures presented, the debates and the live surgeries provided the attendants with the opportunity to be informed, discuss and see how these matters are being handled in real-time, by the surgeon at the operating theatre. The practical sessions, which consisted of hands-on practice on cadavers and ultrasound examination, took place at the Laboratory of Anatomy of the Medical School of the University of Athens. The hands-on practice provided the opportunity to the participants to practice the most modern techniques of shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty on cadaver specimens with the guidance of experienced European and Greek instructors.
The combination of all the aforementioned factors have transformed the Athens Shoulder Course into one of the most complete and successful shoulder seminars in Europe. Proof to this fact is the number of attendees, 235 participants in the theoretical sessions and 60 in the practical sessions. This year, many physiotherapists attended also this course, enabling a constructive communication between them and orthopaedic surgeons. Moreover, this seminar was placed under the auspices of well-known International and Greek scientific bodies (ISAKOS-International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, ESSKA-European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy, HAOST-Hellenic Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Hellenic College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Hellenic Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Sports Injuries, Hellenic Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology and Athens Medical Association.
