Standing by the Fire-Stricken People of Ilia
HYGEIA and MITERA Hospitals stood by the people of Ilia Prefecture, who were stricken by the devastating fires in 2007. The hospitals donated 23 power generators to the villages of 6 municipalities, while a team of volunteers made up of doctors and nurses, accompanied by ambulances (mobile medical units), examined the residents of the surrounding areas and distributed medical supplies.
The aim of the first visit was to offer relief to the fire-stricken residents, record their immediate needs and assess whether further assistance was necessary. A total of 3 mobile units, with 6 doctors, 14 nurses and administrative staff, were dispatched to the area, while the 23 generators were delivered to remote villages of the municipalities of Zacharo, Figaleia, Andritsaina, Alifeira, Ancient Olympia and Foloi.
The municipalities of Zacharo and the municipal departments of Artermida and Kalidoni-Kostamera each received one large generator, while the 20 smaller ones were donated to the villages Makistos, Chrysochori, Minthi and Agios Ilias within the Municipality of Zacharo; Perivolia, Petralona, Stomio and Ancient Figaleia within the Municipality of Figaleia; Kafkania, Kryoneri and Chelidoni within the Municipality of Ancient Olympia; Douka and Milies within the Municipality of Foloi; and Amygdalies and Leivadakia within the Municipality of Alifeira.
On August 30 and 31, a team of volunteers visited more than 30 villages in these municipalities, delivered the generators and performed a large number of medical tests, while they also visited the local medical centers and donated medical supplies. The people who were examined will continue receiving free-of-charge follow-ups from the Group physicians for as long as needed.
