HYGEIA: 5th Trancatheter Heart Valve Therapy Conference
16 May 2016
The 5th annual Trancatheter Heart Valve Therapy Conference – held on May 13-14, 2016 at the N. Louros Conference Center, MITERA Hospital – focused on the latest developments in the field. The event was organized under the auspices of the Hellenic Cardiac Society and the Hellenic College of Cardiology.
The Conference has been established as the leading medical event of the field in Greece and contributes to promoting optimal conditions and practices through interaction between the Heart Teams and all physicians involved in cardiac valve repair, ensuring the best possible medical care for Greek patients.
As explained by the Conference organizers, Dr Stratis Pattakos, Director of the 2nd Cardiac Surgery Clinic at HYGEIA Hospital, and Dr Konstantinos Spargias, Director of the Hospital’s Trancatheter Heart Valve Department, “The new method of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has matured over 10 years of successful clinical applications and fast market penetration, thanks to technological advances and findings from major clinical trials. The most recent of these have demonstrated the superiority of the TAVR over surgery, even for intermediate risk patients, a fact which is expected to expand the application of the method even further. Actually, more than 400 such procedures have already been performed at HYGEIA.”
The Conference chairmen also noted, “The acceptance of the MitraClip, the first transcatheter therapy for the mitral valve, is very similar to the spread of the TAVR. Our Hospital is the main MitraClip trial center in Europe, offering the treatment pro bono as part of the study.”
Meanwhile, HYGEIA has been recognized as a Center of Excellence & Training for the TAVR program by the largest medical supply companies in the world (Medtronic & St Jude). Teams of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and other related specialties from Greece and abroad visit HYGEIA Hospital to participate in educational seminars, which include lectures and live broadcast of procedures performed in the state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Room.
